Push Notifications: Compose, Segment, Send

Push notifications drive 5–10× the engagement of email. Here's how to use them without becoming the customer who unsubscribed.

Push notifications are exclusive to the Branded App tier — they require an installed app to deliver. If you're on the Microsite plan, this article doesn't apply yet, but read it before you decide whether to upgrade.

What makes push different from email or WhatsApp

Push lands directly on the home screen of the customer's phone. No inbox, no spam folder, no unsubscribe friction. Open rates run 30–50% (vs. 30% for email, 70–90% for WhatsApp).

The trade-off: customers will uninstall your app if you abuse push. Two messages a week is the upper limit for most operators. Five messages a week and uninstall rates spike.

Push is for things that matter

Game day specials, weekend promos, win-back coupons, new menu items — yes. "Hello, just checking in" — never.

Composition rules

  • Title under 40 chars. "Game day special: 2 large pies + wings $39" — yes. Anything longer truncates on iOS lock screen.
  • Body under 100 chars. "Order by 4pm Sunday for game time delivery." — direct, action-oriented.
  • One CTA. Don't try to promote 3 things in one push. Customers tap or they don't.
  • Match the customer's language. EatsyAI generates EN + ES variants. Use them.

Segmenting

You'll see better conversion sending to a smaller, more targeted audience than blasting your entire app user base. Available segments:

  • Frequency: customers who order weekly, monthly, quarterly
  • Recency: customers who haven't ordered in 30/60/90 days
  • Ticket size: customers whose average ticket is above/below a threshold
  • Loyalty tier: Bronze, Silver, Gold (if you use tiered loyalty)
  • Location: nearest store (multi-location operators)
  • Past order patterns: customers who've ordered pizza, customers who've ordered catering, etc.

Common combinations:

  • Game day pre-promo: weekly customers + nearest 3-mile location → "Game day starts at 4pm — order by 3:30."
  • New menu item launch: all customers → "New: Birria Bowl. Available today."
  • Win-back: customers who haven't ordered in 30+ days → "$5 off your next order, expires Friday."

How to compose and send

  1. Open Marketing → Campaigns → Push Notifications → New Campaign

Pick a template (game day, new item, win-back, generic) or compose from scratch.

  2. Write title + body in one language

EatsyAI auto-suggests the other language as a draft. You edit if needed.

  3. Pick your segment

Use the filters above. Preview audience size — you'll see "Sending to 1,247 customers."

  4. Schedule or send

Send immediately or schedule. For game day campaigns, schedule 2–3 hours before kickoff so customers have time to order.

  5. Check results

Open rate within 1 hour, conversion rate within 24 hours. Compare to your last few campaigns.

What not to do

  • Don't push more than 2× per week to the same customer. Set up a rule that prevents over-pushing.
  • Don't push at 7am or after 10pm. Lunch hour and dinner hour windows. Match local time per zone.
  • Don't forget A/B testing. Run two variants of a subject line on a 10% sample, see which wins, send the winner to the other 90%.
  • Don't push promo to customers who just ordered. Wait at least 4 hours.
